The Centrepiece: Jack Skellington Up on Spiral Hill
Start here. There is no more iconic image in the entire NBC universe than Jack standing atop Spiral Hill, silhouetted against a full moon, surveying his domain. Jack Skellington Up on Spiral Hill is exactly that: the Spiral Hill itself sculpted in dark textured resin, curling upward from a graveyard base scattered with carved pumpkins and iron-gated headstones, with Jack standing at the very top - the full moon behind him glowing a deep amber yellow. It illuminates. It dominates a room. It is, without question, the crown jewel of the collection and one of the most dramatically composed village pieces Department 56 has ever produced.
The Buildings
Every village needs architecture. Halloween Town's is, naturally, deeply unsettling.
The Harlequin House is the kind of building that seems to look back at you. Sculpted in mottled grey, it sits low and squat with a warped roofline that rises into two great twisted horns - striped in dark bands like something that used to be a living creature. The door glows amber from within. A pumpkin crouches beside it in the dark. A small graveyard of iron crosses huddles at its side. It is, in the best possible way, a house you would absolutely not knock on at Halloween.
Display it alongside the Spiral Hill and you have the bones of Halloween Town.
The Residents
Halloween Town's population is not exactly reassuring, and Department 56 has done justice to its more colourful citizens.
Oogie Boogie Gives a Spin is a masterpiece of sinister carnival energy. The illuminated piece shows Oogie - that great green burlap sack of a villain - operating his wheel of torture: a spinning disc of blue and gold with a skeleton pinned to it, surrounded by his collection of bladed and dangerous implements, lit from below in cold blue light. Oogie himself stands to one side, one arm raised in theatrical delight, a pumpkin dangling from his hand. It captures everything the character is - theatrical, dangerous, and delighted with himself.
Helgamine the Witch and the Harlequin Demon are two of Halloween Town's citizens given the full Department 56 treatment - detailed character figurines that populate the village with the supporting cast the Pumpkin King deserves.
Jack, Sally, and Zero
The heart of the story, in miniature.
Jack Discovers Christmas Town captures the pivotal moment: Jack stumbling through the door in the tree and encountering Christmas for the first time, that mixture of wonder and scheming already beginning behind those hollow eyes. It's a narrative piece - a scene from the film rendered in three dimensions - and it gives the village a storytelling dimension that character-only figurines can't match.
Sally's Date Night and Jack Steals Christmas fill in the story: Sally, hopeful and slightly anxious as always; Jack, mid-heist, because of course he is. And then there's Zero - the ghost dog with his glowing pumpkin nose, the most loyal resident of Halloween Town and a wonderfully affordable way to add a piece of it to your shelf.
